🎃Arthouse Spooky Movies Thread🎃
Here's some indie, offbeat horror(ish) films I watched recently.

Demon (2015)
The real horror is making a fool of yourself at your own wedding. Best drunken ensemble scenes since Underground.

Good Manners (2017)
Brazilian lesbian werewolf horror drama. It's almost two movies in one. Touching.

The Endless (2017)
Two brothers coming to terms with their hippie UFO cult past. Perhaps a bit too much cosmic horror derailing the psychological thriller.

The Wailing (2016)
It starts as a kind of detective comedy, but turns into a brilliant paranormal Rashomon.

A Ghost Story (2017)
The existential kind of horror. Beautifully restrained. A bit self-indulgent in its slowness, it gives you plenty of time to think about your own mortality.

November (2017)
Estonian folk tales are terrifying. Incredible cinematography. One of the most underrated movies in recent years.
If you liked Midsommar, this is the next level.

Colors Out of Space (2019)
Apt, colorful Lovecraft adaptation. You are basically waiting for Nicholas Cage to go insane.

It's also the long awaited comeback of weirdo director Richard Stanley. Bonus viewing: Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970)
A vintage one. Impossibly creepy Czech fantasy-horror.
It's like a lush, messed up Alice in Wonderland.
Only if you are ok with the sexualization of a 13yo actress.

Prospect (2018)
I'm cheating because it's more of a sci-fi thriller. Father & daughter mining in a ridiculously dangerous alien forest.

Impressive how far it can go with a relatively low budget.

Under the Shadow (2016)
What's scarier? Being a civilian during the Iran-Iraq war? Parenting? Being a secular woman under the Islamic Republic of Iran? LITERAL GHOSTS?

Smart, original, and genuinely terrifying.

One Cut of the Dead (2017)
It has zombies, but it's more comedy than horror. A very clever meta-movie, and a celebration of low budget filmmaking.

A Blair Witch Project for the Zoom era, entirely filmed under quarantine restrictions. A bit slight and conventionally jumpscary, but I appreciated the medium specificity.

Tigers Are Not Afraid (2017)
A dark fairy tale set against the backdrop of the Mexican drug war. There are some wonky parts in it, but it's uncompromising and visually striking.

In Fabric (2018)
A hypnotizing satire of consumerism. It follows a haunted dress, drawing a surreal narrative arc. Some Dario Argento's vibes and colors, but smarter, weirder, and funnier than any Italian giallo.

A Field in England (2013)

Historical-psychological-folk-horror-dark-comedy served with a side of magic mushrooms.

Hagazussa (2017)
A realistic portrayal of a 15th century witch. It's slow and bleak, but the terrific cinematography and sound design make it worth. A Germanic, arthouse counterpart to The Witch (2015)

Titane (2021)
"The Palme d'Or winning horror about a woman that gets impregnated by a car" is a tempting sales pitch, but I found it too off putting and disjointed despite some brilliant moments.
Unique for sure, but you can wait for it to be on streaming.

A couple of aging Brooklyn hipsters go on an off-the-grid vacation as an alien invasion begins.
Portlandia-esque humor + apocalyptic sci-fi. Filmed before COVID but eerily prescient.

Teeth (2007)
That vagina dentata cult movie.
I can't believe that 1) this film was made, 2) works surprisingly well as satirical comedy and horror, and 3) makes a complicated connection between religious sex-negativity and rape culture

It's adapted from a play through some bold, unconventional directing.
